My Interactive Multimedia Coding Assignment – IDEA

I took inspiration from the Dumb Ways To Die app. – It is a test of speed and hand-eye coordination.

Busy Barber Game:

  • Customers come up on screen with different amounts of hair on their bodies.
  • The user has to remove the hair using whichever method the customer requires – scissor, shave, wax, hair removal cream.
  • Some customers may also require a head massage or a wash and blow dry – meaning they will take longer to do.
  • Each job will require a different interaction.
  • The user interacts with the different tools on-screen using mouse/touch movements of a certain direction/speed. Perhaps if I develop the game for android I could make use of the “blow” interaction with the microphone for working the hair dryer.
  • The user is against the clock to get through as many customers as possible before they run out of time.
  • The timer gets shorter and the customers get hairier/more demanding as the levels go up.
  • Every time they complete a customer successfully they gain 5 seconds
  • A dissatisfied customer causes the loss of a life. Each user begins with 3 lives.

  • I will hopefully be able to randomize the customers that appear and also randomise their requirements each time they appear – this way the user will have a more dynamic experience and the game will be more difficult as they will not be able to predict what is coming next.

  • Media content for this will include graphics and animations created using Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash. I will also be including audio in the form of backing music and sound effects. I will create audio using Protools and midi. I may record the sound effects myself using my own resources.

Story Book Progress Report ~ Number two

Here is the outline of our story so far:

My role is to depict a time in life when we have time to reflect upon mistakes we may have made in the past and regrets we may be holding in our hearts. Reconciliation is an important process in mending relationships built and broken by love. By this stage in the series Ben and Harry’s relationship has been built and broken by love. In my book I want to explore the subjects of life changes, fear, loneliness, regret, heavyheartedness, begrudgery and stubbornness as well as positive factors such as salvation, rest, forgiveness,  reminiscence, forward thinking and rekindled friendships.

I feel that the Nursing home is a suitable setting for this book as it holds a similar air to the conditions of the friendship back when it blossomed – at a time when the two characters were equal in life. I think that this is an ideal setting for helping the story to come full circle. I want to form a sort of mirror image between the two situations: Harry and Ben meeting for the first time at Playschool as children and Harry and Ben re-meeting for the first time after years of dispute at a nursing home as elderly men.  I want to recreate the feelings that they felt as children – shyness, unsureness, timidness, nervousness. But with these feelings will also come a wealth of emotion and history – this will be the difference between the two situations.

I will be fleshing out my book in my next post but before going into narrative detail I wanted to set down in my mind what I wanted the audience to get from the book and what air the book would put across. This story will have a happy ending but I want it to coax the reader to feel empathy for the two men in their somewhat lonesome situation.

Story Book Progress Report ~ Numero Uno

My DVD (Digital Visualisation and Design) group and I have had a few meetings to date regarding our story book project. We’ve got the bones of our narrative worked out and ready for flesh. Our book series is one that follows two friends, Harry and Ben, through different stages of their lives together. It is a study of their friendship as it grows and adapts along the trials and tribulations of life. The 4 books are split up into 4 different life stages – childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. My book is the final book of the series – old age.

I have many ideas that I’m looking forward to exploring with regards to my graphics for this book. One of my Ideas is to work with layering and textures (as per the image above).  I think that this would be a well suited medium to work with as it suggests to me connotations of lived life, layers, weathered, character, history, wisdom, emotional depth. I would like to continue my research in to areas such and collage and pop-up art.
